Mara Kanthak - Si Le Soleil Ne Revenait Pas

Sited in a valley between two mountain ranges, the village of Grengiols receives no direct sunlight. The church forms the central element in a masterplan for the shadowy village. It becomes orchestrated by light redirected via a fibre-optic system from a 350m tower. Gilded rubber funnels are attached to every opening that illuminate the interior with a mysterious glow. As such, the church interior turns into a permanent celebration of light. By covering public spaces with tent-like structures that extend beyond existing roof overhangs, parts of the village are made into even darker zones and the perception of darkness is altered and diversified.
