Deconstructing Nostalgia
Brixham is witnessing a shift in its economic identity from a commercial fishing town, that dates to the 1400s, to now being recognised as a popular tourist destination. Commencing at the end of the Second World War, Brixham’s dramatic natural landscape gave rise to a sprawl of holiday parks selling the image of the quintessential seaside town, providing accommodation for an influx of holidaymakers. Deconstruction Nostaligia initially searches to understand this rhythm of longing so that through the lens of the nostalgic image we can begin to understanding the perception of place in Brixham, and how collective memory continues to influence the towns present.
