The Greenhouse Archipelago

How can we revolutionise greenhouse agriculture to prioritise symbiosis between people and nature while ensuring food security and meeting the increasing food demand projected for the global population by 2050?

Exploring the horticulture of greenhouses, this design project critically assesses both the Dutch model and Almeria, Spain. While Almería boasts the highest concentration of greenhouses in Europe, it faces significant challenges, including inadequate living conditions, social issues, and severe environmental impacts. Drawing lessons from these challenges, the project aims to re-envision a new agricultural model.

Using greenhouses as the urban fabric, the design confronts monocultural landscapes, addressing pivotal social and environmental concerns. Furthermore, it delves into issues of food security, resource management, cultivation practices, and cultural identity, while also scrutinising the conditions of greenhouse workers and users.
